The NX prototype class was created to test the first Earth Warp 3 engine, the immediate predecessor to the Warp 5 engine. In 2143 the NX Alpha was destroyed shortly after it reached warp 2.2; a couple days later the NX beta broke warp 2.5. Eight months later the NX Delta broke warp 3 completing the goal of the program. The NX proto type shares a direct design lineage with Earth's first warp ship, the Phoenix, with the fold out nacelles replaced with solid pylons.
