DS9 was originally constructed by the Cardassians as an ore mining facility in orbit of Bajor; when the Federation took control of the station, it was moved to defend the Bajoran wormhole. The station is composed of the main core with operations, the habitat ring, and docking ring. On the docking ring, six pylons are capable of docking Starfleet's largest ships and twelve smaller ships along the rings perimeter. Starfleet has upgraded DS9 to a heavily armed installation with a high capacity graviton shield system and type X and XI phasers. The Defiant class, U.S.S. Defiant, is also permanently stationed at DS9.

DS9 can dock several large starships and is an interstellar hub of trade and exploration.
DS9 formally was in orbit of Bajor during the Cardassian occupation of Bajor and now sits at the mouth of the Bajorian wormhole, gateway to the Gamma Quadrant.
DS9 played a vital role in the Dominion War and the future of the Federation, Dominion, Cardassia, the Klingon Empire, and Bajor.
